1979

Blake was his name and it was the most tragic-comedy year for him. He was in the class of 1978; the most bonding class in the history of Vietnam college of Theatre Arts.

Everyone in that class loved themselves so much that one would think they all were related through family. The school authorities loved them and wished they did never graduate. They were 33 in number and Blake, not the most senior, but supposedly the most thoughtful was the group’s head.

The principal always referred to them as "the only uneven number that is even", and it made them so proud to receive such a unique praise.

Blake’s job was to keep everyone in good terms. Being neutral/impartial was the class expectancy of him, and this role, he played with honour and humility.

In the last year of a four years course, coarse came roaring, like it would for everything great, especially relationships. The bond of class 1978 was threatened.

Blake had fallen in love with a girl in their class who didn't know about it, and without the knowledge of anyone, making neutral decisions had become so difficult for him because he was drawn to pleasing the girl. Close to graduation was when it burst into a flame of fire.

As opposed to majority carrying the vote most of the times, except on cases he thought it irrational or immoral, explained it to the class who always understood, that minority should at the time carry the vote; Blake, to the surprise of everyone, took the minority's vote for a decision that was delicate and obvious that minority at that moment was unreasonable.

He was being drawn to please the secret admired love of his life.

Everyone spoke up, but he was headed for minority. This caused a roar that shook the school, just few weeks before graduation. Two groups in class 1978, not in good terms. The school authority took it upon themselves to organise a meeting that would bring them together; a cocktail party. Almost all the teachers took turns to speak to them, but surprisingly, anger had brewed like beverage in the hearts of each person, and forgiveness was far fetched. Drinks ordered went to waste as the school authority gave up.

Unfortunately, graduation came and passed and they all parted with grudges in their hearts. It was after then that Blake approached his secret admired love to propose a relationship.

"It is mutual", she replied.

Blake was high! He was most happy, and began to think of ways to celebrate the beginning of their friendship. And you must know that Blake is a home boy. He mostly liked to cook his food at home, do his laundry and make himself nice smoothies.

So, he organised a home visit for her. Cooked, decorated. He had prepared fruits and nuts for a special smoothie, and would blend it after she arrived.

“Bring! Bring!”, the bell rang, everywhere booming in strong air freshener. He welcomed his new girlfriend, so flattered to have her, offered her a bunch of flower.

"Happy New Year", they both said to each other.

They spoke about a lot, while she lay her head on his chest, ate some little, you know, just being free.
He took her to the kitchen to  blend the frozen pack into smoothie. It was colourful and attracting. Blake set his hand into the fridge and brought out a covered jar of cocktail made by him. She wanted some too. She took some in a glass, sipping from the both one after the other.

Suddenly, she seemed like something was interesting.

"Taste this two together", she urged Blake to have a taste, who did. Curious to get a better taste, he got another glass, and mixed the both in little quantity. It was great! It was now, that Blake looked into her eyes and kissed her.

It didn’t end there. They decided to have fun mixing. There was a lot of mixing; from fruits to cereals, to nuts. It was just a day!

"I think we should celebrate everything we have created", Blake suggested, "I feel like making peace. We should invite our classmates"

She didn’t think it was a great idea, because she didn’t want to be judged, but however, Blake assured her, and they decided, created an invitation and sent it to all their classmates one after the other, pleading with each person to inform another.

Surprisingly, everyone gathered, with their faces folded from past grudges. Blake knew he had a long and serious talk to do. His apology helped, but not until they began to serve their homemade drinks. Everyone tasting each drink. He noticed that a particular one was their favourite. They pleaded with him to make more. It made Blake and his girlfriend really happy, who used up the last of the ingredients making more.

“make more of this drink often and invite us”, everyone requested.

“maybe we should call it 33 drink of life", someone suggested.

“no! 33 beer", another opposed.

“what about 33 bond!”, said another.

It was a suggestion stampede and laughter filled the room. Many funny suggestions hauled in, but they gave Blake a lot of insight.

To end the get together, he introduced Asher as his girlfriend and thanked her duly for the initiative. They were all happy for him.

He had succeeded to build stronger the “33 bond" again!

The couple decided to start something beautiful with the mixture that left everyone wanting more, and that was the beginning of a company that would later become historic; “33 Export Lager Beer". More historically and memorable, of friendship bonds. Exporting in large quantities to different parts of the world.

Every year, the same time, the 33 class of 1978 came together to celebrate the Blake’s initiative of 1979!

  • Her eyes quickly turned green. I could literally see two old women laughing in there. While I cried to go back home with Nwokedi, she made him believe that she knew exactly how to stop from crying. She deceived him with a smile that only me knew the evil behind. Though it was at age four, I can vividly remember telling Nwokedi to find me in the grave, while he waved me bye. Not up to 45 seconds, Aunty Kwili Kwili gave me a pinch that left a scar behind my...

We had been friends for almost three years, and for the first time, I wanted to board a public transport to his house, because I really wanted to scold him like a foolish child. It was 7 rupees for the three kilometres journey" ....that is the pipe that conserved the water of love and a divine visitation between a 75 years Indian handsome man and a 24 years African beauty queen who all her years in India, had always been disgusted by the attitude of most Indian men.
